PolyBak Applications
Our Five Standard PolyBak Applications
PolyBak is most recognized as a balancing backer, but it works well in many different applications! Here are five standard PolyBak applications and our recommended models for each. Please keep in mind that for the best results, there are many project-specific factors to consider when selecting a model. If you’re not sure, we would love to send you samples and help you find the best solution.
Balancing Backer
When assembling a decorative panel, there are three main parts: the decorative laminate on the top, a substrate in the middle, and a balancing backer on the bottom. The bottom piece is referred to as a balancing backer because, to prevent the substrate from warping after applying the decorative laminate, you must have a backer of similar thickness and strength on the other side.
Model Recommendations: 42-13, 69-28, 90-28, or Ultra as a replacement for Phenolic.
Crossband
When we use the term ‘Crossband’, we are referencing an application where PolyBak is positioned between the substrate and the decorative face. This application is useful in projects that use a thin wood veneer or similar laminate. PolyBak provides a smooth surface for the face by eliminating any potential telegraphing that may occur from the substrate.
Model Recommendations: 69-20, 69-28 or 67-28
Overlay
For some projects PolyBak serves as an overlay. This means that PolyBak is positioned over the substrate as the decorative face. It is then ready for further decorative treatments like being painted. If additional work is being done, it can be sanded to bond a veneer or laminate over it.
Model Recommendations: 42-13, 69-20, 69-28 or 67-28
Substrate
Some decorative laminates are incredibly thin, such as foils, lightweight papers, and wood veneers. To prevent tearing when applying, PolyBak can be applied as a substrate. This increases the laminate’s durability and ease of use by creating a thicker and more controllable product.
Model Recommendations: 67-28, 69-28 or 90-28
Profile Wrapping
When we use the term ‘Profile Wrapping’, we are referring to an application where PolyBak is wrapped around a substrate. This method is frequently used in fenestration and doors but can be found in several woodworking processes. PolyBak is ideal in this application because of its unique flexibility and strength.
Model Recommendations: 42-13 or 42-28
